Remember your audience when decorating for a children's Christmas party. Young party-goers are similar to adults in that they will be comfortable and relaxed at a party where the host takes their interests into account. Start with a broad theme or incorporate smaller decorating ideas for age-appropriate decorations. Have your child brainstorm decoration ideas and later help assemble them. Does this Spark an idea?
Religious Christmas
Young children enjoy learning about the religious aspects of Christmas. Make party decorations reflect their interests, such as a nativity scene. Find plastic ones that children can interact with as you read biblical stories at the party. If you have space, design a life size one. Find costumes, make them or improvise with material. Young imaginations will design an interesting nativity scene for a wonderful party decoration. Bring in hay to liven the real nativity scene. Another way to incorporate religion into decorations is with books. Gather religious Christmas stories and set them throughout the house. Replace other books on bookshelf with them or pile them, adorn them with a bow and place on a side table.
Magical Christmas
Part of the fun adults have with Christmas is the excitement children get from a magical Christmas. Capture their youthful excitement for the party's decorations. Figurines or cut-outs of Santa Claus, personalized stockings and bright lights all amaze children. Christmas trees add warmth and fun to a Christmas party. Variate plain tree fare by adding blinking lights or over-sized ornaments. Decorations are very diverse in the U.S., "because of its multi-cultural nature" according to Why Christmas. Apply this idea to your child's Christmas party. Use typical decorations, such as popcorn strings on a tree. Part of the party's activities could be decorating a smaller tree specifically for the revelers. Go outside the American Christmas ideas for a mini-history lesson. For instance, if you wanted to mimic Christmas in Costa Rica, you could decorate Christmas wreaths with cypress branches, red coffee berries and ribbons. People in Costa Rica also decorate with tropical flowers, which you might find silk flowers to mimic. Research a bit and incorporate another country's decorations into the children's Christmas party.
Cartoon Christmas
Cartoons and other children television programming typically have a holiday broadcast and subsequent pictures, stuffed animals and toys. Think of one or two characters who celebrate Christmas and purchase their decor. You can also find pictures online. Print these and have your child or your child and his guests color them for special decorations.
Toy Decorations
You can use regular toys from around the house as decorations. If your child has a teddy bear collection, bring them out and tie a Christmas bow around each neck. You could also set them around the tree, in a sleigh or sticking from Santa's gift bag. Take toy riding-vehicles and place a small wreath on the front or a Christmas-themed vanity license plate.
