When deciding whether to change the glass in your tabletop to marble, aesthetics and the marble supplier are the main concerns. Glass and marble have virtually the same weight, so if your table already supports glass, then marble should not be a problem. Finding someone with a good selection of marble who can also custom cut it might not be easy to find. Given the range of marbles and similar stones available, you have the potential for a wide variety of looks and colors to match the decor of your room. Does this Spark an idea?
Replacing the tabletop
Find a good stoneworker or marble supplier. If you are not able to find anyone locally, the shipping costs may be prohibitive and the color and pattern may not be precise; colors can be difficult to represent online. The supplier will not only need to cut the marble to the proper size, but also to the proper depth if you are dropping into a recessed opening in a table. If the table is small you may find marble tile that is used for flooring to replace the glass. Most large home improvement centers have a wide selection. This probably won't do for a freestanding table as the edges on the tiles are not finished.
If you are looking for simplicity and a clean presentation, a Carrara-type marble--usually a brilliant white--is a classic way to go. If you have patterns or designs in the room, a veined marble or grained stone can match that. You may also want to consider a pattern to bring more visual activity to a space dominated by monochrome walls or furnishings. You can find marble from almost any area of the spectrum; yellows, blues, greens and reds being especially prevalent. Beautiful stones may also be found locally, which could suit not only your decor but your budget. You could mix and match different types around a room. The Romans, who were connoisseurs of marble, did this all the time, notably in the floor from the Lamiani Gardens to create beautiful and dynamic designs.
