How to Design a Home Pub Space

How to Design a Home Pub Space

A home pub or bar area is a cornerstone for entertaining small groups of friends and families. Much like the kitchen is a gathering place during parties, incorporating a home pub serves as another space for guests to mingle and converse with each other in a casual setting. Creating a home pub enhances the party experience, creates a secondary setting for adults if children are present at the gathering, and offers the host an opportunity to safely manage guests' consumption. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Determine location within the home for the pub. A location like a vacant room, basement area or corner in the family room is ideal. Make sure the space has room for a portable bar with a back table behind the bar, or utilize a preexisting built-in bar, which typically has additional counter space as part of its design. If neither exists, utilize a counter top area but add an additional table for storage of bar items.

    2

Place the bar near a water source like a sink or install a sink with counter top near a water outlet for sanitation. Allow for enough counter space to have at least two adults behind the bar. Measure and allow for a minimum of 10 to 12 feet for front and back counter, and 8 feet deep of space between counters.

    3

Stock the pub with proper glassware, mixing utensils and bar towels. Home pubs are generally intended for small gatherings, so stock approximately six to eight champagne, beer, high ball, martini, white wine and red wine glasses.

    4

Install a small refrigerator in the bar area either underneath the front of the bar or back counter away from any water source. If space allows, install a full-size refrigerator next to the pub area. Stock with beer selections and any juices, soda or water.

    5

Install a wine chiller as a option. Counter top versions with locks can provide guests with wine at its optimum temperature. Wine can also be stored on a wine rack. Wine racks should be set up in a cool, dry area away from direct sun light.

    6

Set up liquor bottles on back counter, or on shelf behind bar. If children are present in the home, design or purchase a liquor cabinet with locks.

    7

Set up bar stools in front of the bar counter. A 10-foot-long area should comfortably fit four to six adults. Seats without backs or arm rests are typical and can accommodate most guests of any size or height.
