Changing a toddler's diaper may be a messy process since a child at this age is constantly on the move. Gather all the materials you need before getting to work so you can move quickly and let the child get back to playing. Help your toddler move toward potty training by asking him to tell you when his diaper needs to be changed.
Instructions
- 1
Lay the toddler down on a clean changing table or pad. Alternately, let the toddler put the cleaning pad on the ground herself so she feels like she's taking an active part in her own potty time.
2Distract the child. Hand him a toy or book to explore while you work. Choose a toy that's too large for him to put in his mouth since this can lead to choking, especially while he's lying down. Sing a song or talk to him in an excited voice throughout the changing process.
3Unfasten the tape on either side of the toddler's diaper. Place a clean diaper nearby.
4Open the front of the dirty diaper, and lay it down flat. Hold the toddler's ankles in one hand, and pull her legs up.
5Wipe the child's genitals with baby wipes. When you're changing a girl's diaper, wipe from front to back to avoid transferring bacteria. Use multiple wipes if necessary to clean the area. Apply diaper rash cream if the child's genitals or bottom is unusually red before putting on a clean diaper.
6Place the wipes inside the dirty diaper, and roll everything up in a ball. Discard the diaper in a trash can with a lid on it.
